Tabernacle Tours Sunday

Have you ever wondered what the golden lampstand, show bread table or Ark of the Covenant looked like?

-----

"Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand, the table and the consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered Ark of the Covenant?" (Hebrews 9:1-4)

Have you ever wondered what the golden lampstand, bread table or Ark of the Covenant looked like? Wouldn't you love to go back in time and see them so they would be seared in your memory forever?

Well, no time travel is required but we just happen to have a tabernacle in the Crossroads building, including replicas of the holy objects mentioned in the Bible. No kidding! Our women's ministry has constructed a replica of the tabernacle in Room 203 and has shown how the various elements relate to the person and work of Jesus Christ. It's amazing!
Sunday morning we are inviting you to come and tour our replica tabernacle and be
amazed for yourself. See how the high priest offered sacrifices, cleansed his hands,
prepared the showbread, tended the lampstand, and offered blood for forgiveness on the Ark's Mercy Seat.

We will have five tours open to everyone (limited to 50 people per tour) starting at 9:00.
The tour begins at the entrance to Room 203B upstairs. Each tour lasts about 20 minutes.
Tour times are 9:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30 and 12:15.

Sunday School classes have been relocated for this Sunday because of the tabernacle.
Things will return to normal on Nov. 7th. Here's the schedule for this Sunday morning:

9AM —
• Life of Christ class, Room 202
• CBC Families class, Room 201
• CBC 101 class in the Fireside Room

10:45AM —
• Daniel class, Room 202
• Acts class, Room 201

12:00PM —
• Baptism class for kids, Fireside Room

Octoberfest Tonight

Hey Kids and Parents! Our Octoberfest family fun night begins at 6:45 this evening at Crossroads. We have bounce houses set up, a station for kids to trade tickets for goodies, carnival games and lots of food. The admission price is one bag of candy per child. That way we'll ensure that there's enough candy to go around. We'll wrap up the festivities around 8pm.

Come on out to Crossroads!

Career Network & Workshop: Here to Serve

Recent job reports show that unemployment in America has finally reached double digits — 10 percent — and for a country of 300 million, that means 30 million Americans are currently out of work. Maybe you're one of them. Even though the job search is tough and often frustrating, Crossroads has two support and resource groups that meet regularly to help you navigate your search and — hopefully — land a solid position.
 CBC Career Networkhttp://www.cbccareernetwork.com
Every Wednesday night from 6:45-8:30 the Career Network holds free meetings downstairs in Room 15 (nicknamed "The Temple"). There is no charge to attend. Rex Jones, a human resources professional, leads this ministry, which seeks to encourage job seekers, offer resume help, and share job leads. Just come on through the lower entrance to the CBC building and Room 15 is immediately to your left.

CBC Career Transition Workshop
Once a month during the school year we hold a free all-day Saturday workshop in the auditorium, where human resources professionals will offer job search advice, resume help, and help you network as you search for a job. The next workshop is October 9th. November's workshop will be the 13th, 9am to 4pm. We ask that you reserve a spot so we can set up enough tables, chairs, etc. and make sure the workshop does not get so big that it's not as effective for you. E-mail HERE to reserve your free spot.

May the Lord bless your search! And remember that we're here to support you in His Name.

Christmas in September (CIS) is over and you, our wonderful body, contributed $4,600 for our missionaries. Way to go! Hey guys! Tomorrow morning is our next men's breakfast here at the church. We'll start swapping fish stories (fellowshipping) around 7:45, eat at 8 and be done by 9. His most recent effort is at the McFadden Ranch TYC boys facility in Roanoke. The meal is free, though donation baskets will be out to help cover the food cost. Come join us!

Special Price for Men's Retreat

Calling all early birds! Our October men's retreat has a special registration price for the next two Sundays: $99 bucks. The retreat normally costs $120 (the break-even price), so we're offering you a savings of $21 (or 17.5-percent, for you CPAs). We want every guy at CBC to come join us at Brookhaven Retreat Center in East Texas for a wonderful time of relationship building, worship and discipleship (mixed in with golf, horseshoes and competitive table tennis, of course). Sign up here. Ron Ritchie is flying in from California to be our speaker. Ron is somewhat of a legend in many eyes, having graduated alongside Chuck Swindoll from Dallas Seminary and pastored alongside the late Ray Stedman at Peninsula Bible Church for 30 years. Ron also pastored alongside our own Steve Hixon in Colorado and now runs Free at Last ministry, which allows him to travel and teach about the Spirit of God and importance of discipleship. He's a one-of-a-kind man with a gentle spirit and an apostle's beard. Seriously.

Here's a video clip from Ron's 2009 Winter Bible Conference message at Crossroads, his one and only trip here.

Kim Hill is Coming to CBC

Singer-songwriter Kim Hill will be returning to Crossroads this Sunday morning to help lead us in worship and sing a few of her songs. Kim rose to the top of the Christian Contemporary charts in the late 1980s and early 1990s thanks in large part to her rich songwriting and earthy vocals. Her latest albums have been worship-driven, and several of her works have been sung at CBC over the past year, including "You Are Still Holy" and "In You Alone." She was the featured speaker at our annual Women's Brunch last December and the musical guest at the Women's Retreat in April 2009. Check out her music at her official website. And be sure to come out on Sunday morning to hear Kim.

Haiti Meeting Planned for Sept. 19

It has been nine long months since a devastating earthquake rocked the impoverished nation of Haiti and, even though our sister church in Chambellan escaped without physical harm, it has still been affected by the quake's aftermath. Refugees from Port-au-Prince and the nation's center provinces have streamed into Chambellan and the church there has been overwhelmed with people needing help.

We last visited Chambellan in July of 2009 and we'd like to gauge your interest in visiting our sister church early next year. Next Sunday, Sept. 19, we're going to hold an informational and organizational meeting in the cafe after the second service. We'd love for you to buy a meal (proceeds go to Chambellan) and listen to us share our heart for the future trip over lunch.

Our missions meal proceeds will specifically help our sister church take care of the refugee children. Would you buy a meal or two for this cause? Ont he menu is chicken Parmesan, cheesy potatoes and green beans.

Here are two pictures of our sister church, the building and the people.

Attention Coupon Clippers!

We are in need of coupons for our McFadden Ranch boys ministry.  Here's a summary of John Bere's request. John's our contact with the McFadden ministry:

"For those of you that save coupons, if you come across any of the following and don’t want them please send them to me. We are starting to get a strong response out at the ranch and I’m looking for these coupons so I can keep the costs down when I buy them. Thanks"
In case you did not know, McFadden Ranch is a boys home for troubled youths. Our ministry there seeks to share with the boys the good news of a personal relationship and forgiveness with Jesus Christ. The following items are purchased for the boys as rewards for various accomplishments, including memorizing Bible verses. We'll collect them here at the church down in the Ministry Center, which is located between the main stairs in the lobby. That's our community ministries drop-off location.

Here's what John needs:

  • Axe products
  • Old Spice products
  • Head and Shoulders shampoo
  • Colgate toothpaste
  • Johnson and Johnson baby lotion
  • Risk shower gel
  • Irish Spring shower gel

An End-of-Summer Blast

Sgt. Pepper wasn't in the house last night but his favorite bluegrass band certainly was. Beatlegras entertained a crowd of about 600 at CBC, keeping the audience laughing, clapping and having a great time. The homemade ice cream social after the concert added a perfect ending to our end-of-summer blast.

Beatlegras — Dave Walser, George Anderson and Milo Deering — played original arrangements of Beatles songs for about 85 minutes, utilizing upright bass, acoustic guitar, mandolin and fiddle to produce masterful melodies and keep the crowd wide-eyed. They were amazing.

It has been quite a summer for music lovers here at Crossroads. Starting June 27th we enjoyed the special music of Bob Bennett, Sara Groves with Melody Olsen, and Beatlegras as part of our second annual summer concert series. We've also had some Sunday morning guests. We have several more guests coming to CBC this fall, so be sure to stay tuned for details!

Fall Preview #1: SeniorCare

Over the next few weeks, we'll be telling you about all the wonderful classes and groups we have planned for this fall at Crossroads, including a few new ones. This time, we'd like to announce a new support group at CBC: SeniorCare. As the World War II and Korea generations get older, many children and grandchildren are having to make some tough choices when dealing with their elderly and/or sick parents. How do I deal with their estate, their living condition, their finances? How do I manage to keep it together while they seem to be falling apart? That's where SeniorCare hopes to step in. Here's more:

SeniorCare
This fall, on Tuesday evenings beginning Sept. 7 from 7-9, the CareNet ministry of Crossroads Bible Church in Double Oak (8101 FM 407) is hosting a SeniorCare Support Group to minister to those caring for aging, ailing family members.
The format will include interactions with guest speakers and discussion leaders who are highly knowledgeable and experienced in a particular facet of senior care. Helpful materials will be handed out and small group discussions will allow members to share advice or just vent the frustrations of a stage of life “no one taught us about!”
Sounds like what you’re looking for? Let us know! We're really excited to offer this new group and hope that it will help you as you seek to help your loved ones. To sign up for the group, fill out our Fall Registration form in the lobby or online at www.crossroadsbible.org. Contact Pastor Mike Messerli for more information about the group (972-355-3343).

Guatemala Team Blog: 'A Wonderful Experience'

The Guatemala team checked in again on their blog. This week the team has been serving at an orphanage. Here's an excerpt.

" It is the rainy season, and it usually rains in the afternoon.  So, in the afternoon we (the ladies) have craft time with the kids in the classrooms.  That has been a wonderful experience.  The kids have immediately attached themselves to us, and we have fallen in love with them.  There are quite a few special needs kids, and they are precious.  The crafts are a big hit, and we are also teaching them English (as requested by the lead teacher).  We have had interpreters, and through them we are able to incorporate the message of our wonderful Saviour to the kids.  The orphanage is run by a Christian group of women, so the kids are familiar with the gospel.  One of the teachers even commented on Phoebe's name as being from the Bible.  It has been a wonderful experience."

Dispatch from the Field: The Americans Have Landed!

Our Guatemala team has checked in on their trip blog HERE. Follow the link to read the full post but here's a sampling:

"Hello All!
We made it, safe and sound, and what an adventure we have had!  First of all, thank you to everyone for your prayers!  They were felt and greatly appreciated.
Everything has gone well so far.  The flight was smooth for the first hour, mainly due to the fact that we sat at the terminal waiting for some storms to clear the area.  No problem; we'll wait on that.  We took off at 7pm and landed in Guatemala City at 10pm (Texas time.)  Customs was a breeze, and at the end of it all was Brandon's kind smile and warm hug!  After loading up the vans, we did what every American would do; we went to a Burger King!!  Delicioso!  Oh, one huge God-thing that happened:  Brandon told us that because of the heavy rain that was going on that evening, all flights were being diverted to Nicaragua and Honduras, but for Some Reason our flight wasn't diverted."

Go to the Guatemala Team blog.

News & Notes for August 5th

We have a number of things happening here at Crossroads this month and I wanted to highlight just a few.

1. Fall Course Registration Begins August 15 — The staff is putting the finishing touches on this year's list of fall classes and activities and we have a number of new additions to our Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday adult education periods. A full list will be released to the congregation on Sunday. Registration begins Sunday, August 15th, in the church lobby and online soon after. Fall classes begin the week after Labor Day (Sept. 6) and end the week before Thanksgiving.

2. Bluegrass, Nostalgia, and Homemade Ice Cream on August 29 — Sound like a fun evening to you? Even if you're not a fan of bluegrass music, come on out to Crossroads on August 29th at 6:30pm to hear amazing musicianship by popular band Beatlegras and to enjoy fellowship and ice cream after the concert. Beatlegras is a local group that has added a unique twist to classic Beatles tunes, garnering them worldwide acclaim. In 2008, one British radio announcer dubbed George, Milo and Dave "The Fab Three" because he was impressed with their music. Hear a sample of their work on their website: www.beatlegras.com. General admission tickets for the concert cost $5 apiece and go on sale this Sunday in the CBC lobby. If you'd like to bring homemade ice cream to share, fill out a submission form on Sunday morning and drop it off at the ticket sales counter. We encourage you to come out and have fun with us on August 29th!

3. We have a blood drive scheduled for Saturday, August 28th, 8am-1pm here at the church. Sign-up at the Ministry Center desk (located between the main staircases) on Sunday. Blood from the drive is credited to a CBC account at Carter Blood Care.

4. Our Guatemala mission team leaves tomorrow for Central America and we invite you to follow their progress via a new blog: http://guatemalateam2010.blogspot.com. Internet access may be sketchy at times for the team but they promised to keep us informed whenever they could. So keep checking back!

Icing on the Cake: Sara Groves & the Art Show

Sunday night brought a stylish close to the 3rd Annual Art Show with a marvelous concert by Sara Groves and company. After a long, stressful drive from south-central Texas Sunday afternoon, Sara and friend Melody Olsen maintained enough energy and voice to sing and play for about two hours before a sizable crowd in the CBC auditorium. Both stayed for an hour after the concert to greet folks and sign autographs. Troy Groves accompanied his wife on percussion and Aaron Fabbrini played bass.

As Sara found out when she arrived, the 3rd Annual Art Show also concluded Sunday night and brought forth an array of art that impressed her. She played a song about truth and beauty, "Why It Matters," in honor of the show. Over 40 artists contributed 115 works to this year's show, most of whom were new to the show. There were photographs and drawings, paintings and collages, quilts, and items of wood turning, pottery, glass work, metal, stone and clay. Sara's songwriting and vocal art was like icing on a cake — the finishing touch.

Our third and final summer concert will be Sunday evening, August 29th, when popular bluegrass band Beatlegras will bring their unique blend of music and nostalgia to the Crossroads auditorium. We'll have our second homemade ice cream contest after the concert, so get your selections ready! Sign-ups start soon. Tickets for Beatlegras cost $5 apiece and will go on sale in early August.

If that concert is as special as our first two, we're in for a real treat.

Music, Motors & More!

J-Force to the Rescue!
Even though Vacation Bible School is halfway over now, thoughts in the CBC Children's Ministries have already turned towards Music Camp, which is August 2-6 this year. Our program, "J-Force to the Rescue," teaches kids through songs, skits and small group Bible studies how to trust Jesus as our Savior and our friend. Registration begins this Sunday in the CBC cafe. Here are a few more details:
  • August 2-6, 2010; 9am to 3pm each day
  • For kids entering 3rd through 6th grades (must have turned 8 by 9/1/10)
  • Tryouts for solo parts will take place THIS Sunday morning, 9-11am, in room L1 or L2 (off the lobby)
  • There is an $80 cost per child
  • Contact Elizabeth Bowen or Sandi Shipley for more information (972-355-3343)

CBC Riders Ride Again!
The CBC Riders is a fun group of motorcycle enthusiasts and fans that gathers regularly for "rides on the town" or "on the region" for the sake of fellowship and encouragement. This Saturday morning, July 17th, they are once again planning a breakfast ride to Greenwood, TX. The group should be back by noon. If you're interested in joining them, on two wheels or four, meet at the church at 7:00AM. Contact Joe Engel for more ride information.

Sara Groves Ticket Information

Tickets for the July 25th Sara Groves concert at CBC cost $10 apiece and can be purchased here. Just bring your receipt to the door and you're in! Sara, a Minnesota resident, will have her band in tow as she swings through Texas and brings her blended mix of pop and acoustic styles to Crossroads. Her most recent album, "Fireflies & Songs," has garnered critical acclaim and was named "Best Album of 2009" by Christianity Today magazine. The honor is even more impressive considering her ninth studio album beat out new projects by Switchfoot, Steven Curtis Chapman and U2.
"When I'm done with a record, I try to let it go, knowing I have done everything I can do," Sara said after learning about the honor. "But at the same time, a record like this is my heart and soul parading around. It feels good to know that it is resonating.
"I know this gospel can square off with any complexity in our culture or relationships, and that brings me a great deal of joy, to look into every corner of life with this worldview."
The concert starts at 7:00pm at Crossroads Bible Church, 8101 FM 407 (Justin Rd.) in Double Oak, TX. For more information, call the church office at 972-355-3343.

Wednesday Night Fun

If you have ever attended our summer classes and dinners on Wednesday nights, then you know how much fun they are. So far, two weeks into the summer class schedule, we have had:
  • Families and friends (old and new) gathered for a fellowship dinner of lasagna, tacos, brisket and other delectable eats, consumed over discussions ranging from "How's your week?" to "So what's going on in class tonight?" Our dinners start at 6pm each night. We've had over 100 people enjoying the fellowship each of the first two weeks.
  • Over 200 folks attending our adult classes and children's ministries. This year we have photography, "Marriage Matters," creative writing, "Satisfy My Thirsty Soul," and "THUMBs Up!" for kids.
  • Lots of hanging out after class to visit, ask questions, and just absorb the awesome material just taught.
Our summer classes run every Wednesday night through July 28th. Most classes end at 8:30, though some let out earlier and others run over a little. A special "thank you" goes out to all who have made Wednesday nights at Crossroads a big hit for the third year in a row!

Summer Class Registration Winds Down
Our summer classes and fellowship dinners begin next Wednesday evening, June 30th. Have you signed up yet? Here are short descriptions of our 2010 offerings:
Photography — For beginner and intermediate students. We'll cover composition, lighting, exposure, landscapes, and portraits. Bring your camera! Taught by Pastor Steve Hixon
Creative Writing — Learn how to outline, use compare and contrast, and add flair to your blogging, journaling, essays or other creative writings. The class is geared towards adults but middle school and high school students will be accepted. Class taught by John Newton, CBC's communications coordinator.
Marriage Matters — In this class we will be looking at some of the growth challenges that every couple faces in a long-term marriage relationship. Licensed professional counselor Billy Grammer teaches this course.
"Satisfy My Thirsty Soul" book study (for women) — Author Linda Dillow believes that the innate thirst for true, genuine intimacy found deep within a woman is created — and can only be satisfied — by God. Her book can be purchased at any local bookstore (not at CBC)..
"THUMBs Up!" — Elementary-aged kids can take our missions-themed course. Preschoolers will go through our "5 Things" curriculum. We have nursery care for the youngest little ones. Contact Tish Kelley, CBC's childcare director.
Our fellowship dinners are open to everyone and start at 6pm in the café. We usually have a home cooked meal prepared by a CBC group. Donations are accepted to cover the food cost. The classes go from 7-8:30pm. Come join us for food, fellowship and fun! More course details and sign-ups are available in the CBC lobby or online (www.crossroadsbible.org).

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES KICKS OFF SUNDAY NIGHT
Bob Bennett is our first guest in our 2010 Summer Concert Series. The concert is Sunday night, 7pm, and is free to attend. We'll take a love offering to cover Bob's costs. There will be childcare for nursery through kindergarten by reservation only.
Bob first garnered critical acclaim in the early 1980's for his Christian folk-pop songwriting. His 1982 album, "Matters of the Heart," was voted one of the 20 greatest albums in the history of Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) and he has had several #1 radio singles. Now residing in Southern California, Bob has an active concert ministry and records albums every now and then, including "Christmastide," which was released last November. His website is www.bob-bennett.com.

On July 25th, CCM artist Sara Groves and her band will be our special guests. Sara's concert begins at 7pm and tickets cost $10. There will be no childcare for her concert. Tickets are on sale to CBC attendees only this Sunday in the lobby but will be made available to the general public starting Monday through crossroadsbible.org.
Sara is at the peak of her musical career, with awards, radio airplay, and media attention consistently coming her way. However, despite the fame, Sara remains committed to producing genuine musical art that reflects her devotion to Christ, His word, and her family. Her latest album, "Fireflies and Songs," was voted 2009's Album of the Year by Christianity Today. Her website is www.saragroves.com.

3rd Annual Art Show STARTS Soon!
Last year we had over 120 artworks by 50 artists grace our lobby, including several artists from the local community. We hope to better that mark this July 18th through 25th at our 3rd Annual Art Show. You don't have to be a genius or a professional to enter. We'll accept drawings, paintings, photography, woodworking, fabric art, calligraphy, sculpture, and any other art genre. Fill out an artwork submission form, located at the summer class registration table and drop it in the drop box. Directions for the artworks and the art show are located on the back of the submission form. Contact John Newton for more information.
