Earthquake in Haiti

Major Quake Strikes Haiti; Missionaries Safe

5:30pm, Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Brothers and Sisters,

A powerful 7.0 earthquake struck off the west coast of Haiti Tuesday afternoon, leveling buildings and leaving the island of Hispaniola in a state of panic. Scientists have pinpointed the quake 10 miles west of the capital city of Port-au-Prince. An aftershock of 5.9 struck 30 miles farther west.

With much relief, at about 5:10 pm the CBC office heard via phone from missionary L.J. Scott in Les Cayes, located in the south region of the peninsula. L.J. informed us that he and Ruth are safe, as is the mission compound. They felt the effects of the earthquake and an aftershock but had no damage other than a loss of electricity. We have not yet heard from our sister church in Chambellan. Because of its remote location, getting information from Chambellan may take some time.

Please be in prayer for all who call Haiti home, especially our brothers and sisters in Christ. We will update you as soon as information is available concerning the well being of our sister church.
