Earthquake Update 1-13

Just a quick update about Haiti and our missionaries there...

Pastor Mike Messerli received word today via e-mail from Tom and Karen Ferris in Les Cayes, Haiti. It appears that while Port-au-Prince was devastated, the western region of Haiti was largely spared. Les Cayes, estimated population 55,000, is 100 miles west of Port-au-Prince. Tom wrote that the power in Cayes came back on after about two hours and he only has heard of one collapsed building in the city. Yesterday we heard from CBC missionaries L.J. and Ruth Scott, saying they were all right and their home suffered no significant damage. We still have received no word from our sister church in Chambellan, which is typical due to its remote location about 45 miles northwest of Les Cayes. But we know that our sister church compound was built well and the town is over 120 miles from the quake epicenter and aftershocks, so we hope for the best.

More updates will follow, if needed. Please keep the country of Haiti, its people, and the relief workers in your prayers.
